The political situation in the Ondo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress requires urgent attention from all well-meaning stakeholders of our great party.
It has become clear that only the APC National Working Committee can put things right politically in Ondo State today. The party in the state is drifting due to recent developments that threaten our unity, internal cohesion, and electoral prospects.
Both the APC Congress and the Primaries in Ondo State, supervised by Governor Lucky Ayedatiwa, ended up in stalemate. A process that was meant to strengthen the party has instead created division, bitterness, and suspicion among members. Loyal party faithful who participated in good faith are now disillusioned because the exercise lacked fairness and transparency.
A stalemate in such critical party processes signals a failure of leadership and impartiality. It indicates that the level playing field required for internal democracy was not provided. When the umpire abandons neutrality and takes sides, the entire process loses credibility.
It is unfortunate that Governor Ayedatiwa has turned against the interest of the people by imposing an unpopular candidate against the wish of the majority in Ondo State. This action contradicts the progressive ideals of the APC and violates the principle of internal democracy which is the foundation of any serious political party.
Imposition has never helped any political party. It breeds resentment among members. It destroys morale and commitment. It creates the ground for anti-party activities. And ultimately, it hands victory to the opposition. Ondo State must not be allowed to go down that road.
The strength of the APC has always been its internal democracy. If we cannot practice justice within our party, we cannot preach it to Nigerians. If we cannot respect the will of our own members, we cannot ask the electorate to trust us with power.
This State Communication therefore calls on the APC National Working Committee to urgently intervene in the affairs of Ondo State APC. The NWC remains the conscience of the party and the final arbiter in moments of crisis. The Committee has a constitutional and moral duty to protect the integrity of party processes and prevent the party from self-destruction.
We are not asking for special favour for any aspirant. We are demanding fairness for all. We are asking that the people be allowed to choose their leaders through a free, fair, and credible process that reflects the will of the majority.
Governor Lucky Ayedatiwa is the Governor of Ondo State and deserves respect for that office. However, the APC is bigger than any individual. The party belongs to all members who laboured for its growth. No one should be allowed to subvert the collective interest of the party for personal reasons.
Ondo State APC members are loyal and disciplined. But loyalty must not be taken for granted. When people are pushed to the wall by impunity and imposition, the party will be the ultimate loser.
We therefore urge the National Chairman and members of the NWC to act swiftly. Set up a credible mechanism to resolve the stalemate that characterized our Congress and Primaries. Give Ondo State a process that is transparent and acceptable to all stakeholders. Give us a candidate that truly represents the choice of the majority of our members.
The 2027 general elections are approaching. If we get Ondo State right, we will win together. If we get it wrong, we will all suffer the consequences. The time to act is now.
We reaffirm our belief in the APC, in the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and in the progressive ideals that brought us together. We must not allow impunity and imposition to destroy our party in Ondo State.
Only the NWC can put things right. We trust the NWC to act in the best interest of the party.
